How to Lower pH in an Aquarium: The UK Aquarist’s Guide

Your UK tap water probably runs pH 7.4 to 8.2, and the discus / rams / cardinals / crystal shrimp you want to keep would prefer 6.0 to 6.8. Or you just moved and your new tap water is harder than the softwater fish you brought with you. Either way, you need to lower pH — and every guide online tells you to buy a bottle of “pH Down” liquid, which is exactly the wrong answer.

This guide covers what actually works long-term, what causes problems, and — importantly — when you probably shouldn’t lower pH at all.

Understand what pH is first

pH is a logarithmic measure of hydrogen ion concentration. A drop from 8.0 to 7.0 is a tenfold change; a drop from 8.0 to 6.0 is a hundredfold change. This is why “just lower the pH a bit” is easier said than done.

Water’s ability to resist pH change comes from carbonate hardness (KH) — the measure of dissolved carbonates and bicarbonates. Hard-water areas of the UK (most of England outside the Pennines and Peak District) have high KH. Soft-water areas have low KH.

High KH resists pH changes. Adding acids to hard tap water often lowers pH briefly, then the water bounces back up over 24 hours as the buffering re-establishes. This is why bottled “pH Down” doesn’t work long-term — you’re fighting the water’s chemistry with symptomatic treatment.

To lower pH stably, you need to either:

  1. Lower KH first, then acidify (works), OR
  2. Dilute with softer water (works better), OR
  3. Add slow-release organic acids (works well and looks natural)

Test your water first

Before doing anything: know what you’re starting with.

Kit list:

Test your tap water:

  • Fill a container from the cold tap. Let it stand 24 hours (dechlorinates naturally, degases CO2 that would artificially lower pH).
  • Test pH, KH, GH.

A typical UK reading: pH 7.6, KH 8, GH 12. Any of those need to change for softwater species.

Method 1 — Driftwood and bogwood (the easy default)

Best for: mild pH reduction (0.3–0.5 units), aquascape-friendly, near-zero effort.

Aquarium-safe wood releases tannins — organic acids that tint the water a light amber-brown (“blackwater”) and mildly lower pH. The effect is gentle, gradual, and doesn’t destabilise the tank.

What to use:

How:

  1. Soak new wood in a bucket for 5–14 days, changing water daily. Removes surface tannin overload and helps it sink.
  2. Place in the tank; expect the water to yellow for a few weeks.
  3. Pair with dark substrate for the “blackwater” aesthetic if you like it.

Tannins can be removed by activated carbon if you want clearer water later; they’ll return as the wood ages and releases more.

Method 2 — Indian almond leaves (catappa)

Best for: shrimp and betta tanks, mild continuous pH buffering, mild anti-bacterial properties.

Indian almond leaves release tannins and mild organic acids over 3–4 weeks. Also have documented mild anti-microbial and anti-fungal effects — betta breeders and shrimp keepers swear by them.

How:

  • One large leaf per 30 litres, replaced monthly.
  • Or a leaf broken into pieces distributed around the tank.
  • Water will tint slightly amber. Some fish (bettas, apistogramma, discus, cherry shrimp) prefer this heavily.

Small change in pH — usually 0.1–0.3 units — but it’s the change in slope that matters. The water is more consistently soft-blackwater-like even if the pH number doesn’t drop dramatically.

Method 3 — Aquarium peat in the filter

Best for: moderate pH reduction (0.5–1.0 units), demanding softwater species (crystal shrimp, wild bettas).

Aquarium-safe peat or peat granulate placed in a media bag in your filter releases humic acids that both lower pH and reduce KH slowly.

How:

  • Rinse peat first — it releases a lot of colour initially.
  • Place in a filter media bag (nylon stocking works). About 100g per 100 litres tank volume.
  • Monitor pH and KH weekly for the first month. Adjust peat quantity as needed.
  • Replace peat every 2–3 months as it exhausts.

Peat is more aggressive than wood or leaves. Test more often. Watch fish behaviour — sudden pH drops stress fish.

Method 4 — Reverse osmosis (RO) water mixing

Best for: reliable, precise, long-term pH management. Discus keepers, crystal shrimp, wild-caught fish enthusiasts.

Reverse osmosis water is essentially pure water — near-zero minerals, near-zero KH, pH not really applicable (it drifts). By mixing RO with your tap water in the right ratio, you can hit any pH/KH/GH combination consistently.

Setup:

How:

  • Determine your target pH/GH/KH.
  • Test your tap water; test your RO water (both).
  • Calculate a mix ratio. Example: tap pH 7.8 KH 8; RO KH 0 → 50/50 mix gives KH 4 and pH drift to around 7.2.
  • Re-mineralise the mix with a controlled dose of Salty Shrimp GH+ or similar to hit exact target GH.
  • Use the mixed water for water changes only. Never dump straight RO into the tank.

RO gives you complete control. It’s also more work and more expensive up-front, so it’s the “advanced” method for species that truly need it.

What NOT to use

pH Down / pH Adjust liquid. Sold at every UK aquatic shop. Works briefly. Water bounces back within 24 hours as the tank’s KH re-buffers. The pH yo-yo that results is more stressful for fish than water that’s slightly too alkaline. Skip these products entirely.

Lemon juice, vinegar, muriatic acid. No. These lower pH temporarily and unpredictably. They also add flavours and organics you don’t want. Real chemistry problem.

Distilled water alone. Similar to RO but with no minerals — fish need some GH. If you use distilled or RO, always re-mineralise.

Adding CO2 for pH reasons alone. CO2 injection (as covered in our DIY CO2 guide) does lower pH slightly, but only while CO2 is being injected. Overnight and during CO2-off periods, pH rises back. Not a stable solution unless you have a planted tank running CO2 anyway.

Sphagnum moss. Works, but it’s messy and hard to control. Peat granulate does the same job with less mess.

When you probably shouldn’t lower pH at all

Most UK community fish (guppies, mollies, platies, danios, most tetras, corydoras, bristlenose plecos) tolerate pH anywhere from 6.5 to 8.0. If your tap water is pH 7.4 and hard, and you’re keeping community-tank standards, stop trying to hit “ideal” pH. Stability matters far more than the specific number.

You should genuinely lower pH if:

  • You’re keeping discus (target 6.0–6.8) or wild-caught softwater cichlids (apistogramma, wild-form angelfish)
  • You’re keeping crystal red shrimp / caridina shrimp (target 5.8–6.4)
  • You’re keeping neon tetras in a low-nitrate breeding tank and want to trigger spawning
  • Your tap water is unusually hard (pH 8.4+, GH 20+) — even hardy fish struggle at these extremes

You should NOT lower pH if:

  • You’re keeping mollies, guppies, platies, or endlers (they want harder alkaline water — see our mollies guide)
  • You’re keeping African Rift Lake cichlids (they want harder alkaline water)
  • Your fish look healthy and are eating well at current pH
  • Your KH is already low — you’re one small acid dose away from a pH crash

Testing after adjustment

Whatever method you use, monitor for a month:

  • Daily pH readings for the first week
  • Weekly pH, GH, KH readings thereafter
  • Watch fish behaviour — signs of pH stress: gasping, hiding, colour loss, clamped fins
  • Do smaller water changes (10–15% weekly) during adjustment to avoid pH swings

If you see rapid pH swings (>0.3 units per day), you’ve over-adjusted. Back off. Stability beats “correct” every time.

Bottom line

For most UK aquarists, the answer is: driftwood + Indian almond leaves for a mild continuous drop, or aquarium peat in the filter for a stronger effect. If you need precise long-term control for demanding species, invest in an RO unit.

Never use bottled pH Down. If a UK shop pushes it on you, that’s a signal to buy your equipment elsewhere.
